Vice President Kamala Harris held her last two rallies before Election Day on Monday, Nov. 4, in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. There were some big happenings in downtown Ashland in the fall of 2023. The Appalachian Regional Commission chose our little river town for its annual conference. As such, a significant number of people visited the area. While that was already a big deal – with the conference generating discussions about mental health, area economies and future plans – Gov. Andy Beshear presented a special performance for attendees. Eastern Kentucky’s own Tyler Childers put on a smashing concert.

There’s no doubt Mary Jane Epling is a stellar crime reporter, given the sheer volume of content she puts out and the dedication she pours into her work. So seeing her take on a story like the 50-year-old murder case of Jan Niesel was especially interesting. Epling and I share a fascination with criminals and their psychology. But this case was less about the criminal and more about the victim.

The theme for Progress this year was Kentucky Makers and I had a couple stories in mind I wanted to do. Which would require more listening and less talking.
