This summer local youth gained knowledge on agriculture through the Nelson County Extension Office’s Power of Produce Club. Power of Produce or POP Club is a nationwide program built to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in children. Ariana Rodriguez has a passion for service, working to amplify the voices of youth in the foster care system. Earlier this month, Rodriguez became Miss Kentucky. On June 14, Rodriguez was crowned Miss Kentucky, fulfilling a lifelong dream and reaching a goal she’s been working toward since high school. The Thomas Nelson High School class of 2023 alum took to the stage as Miss Bardstown and left as Miss Kentucky.

After 25 years of dedication to Nelson County Schools, Kevin Mattingly is retiring from his role as Director of Facility Services for the district. In 2000, Mattingly said it was like fate to get hired on at Nelson County — connecting with the right person at the right time. He said they were renovating the New Haven School at the time and ran into Johnny Hall.

Members of the Bardstown community came together on Thursday to celebrate Juneteenth through history, music and prayer. Each year, the local Juneteenth celebration continues to grow, finding new ways to celebrate and uplift. This year, dozens gathered at First Baptist Church for a presentation about discovering lineages through slavery. The talk-back was followed by a packed house for an afternoon of music, voices and celebration of local graduates.

The Bardstown-Nelson County Airport establishes a greater connection with area youth after another successful year of the build and flight program. On Saturday, Samuels Field hosted its monthly fly-in breakfast, and despite the rain, vintage cars, local pilots and community members communed. For the last four years, local students flock to the airport each day to gain hands-on experience in the build and flight programs.
