INTRODUCTION The use of critical endpoints or thresholds as thermal tolerance metrics has gained considerable momentum over the last two decades. For example, Deutsch et al. (2008) showed that tropical animals lived at temperatures closer to their physiological limits and were, therefore, more vulnerable to global warming. These authors originally used intrinsic rates of increase to estimate the temperature at which fitness dropped to zero and populations were no longer sustainable.
