While wine’s reputation suffers from its new status as a carcinogen, oligarchs presiding over the Second American Gilded Age engage in hyperbaric therapy, light therapy and cryotherapy. They take longevity drugs, pop supplements, swap out their blood plasma and follow strict diet and exercise regimens. In this milieu, wine appreciation feels positively transgressive. Why not kick it while it’s down? The surest way to ensure wine’s demise is to politicise it. And this is already happening.

This is absurd. A reasonable person should only own one style of wine glass. I don’t need a towering Pinot Noir, a cavernous Cabernet Sauvignon, a bulbous Chardonnay and an abstemious Riesling glass. And yet, here they all are, vying for shelf space. And now, there are new ‘must-have’ shapes on the market. One is modelled after a jet engine (by Melbourne-based Denver & Liely, released last November, £106). Another, the Cocoon (Stölzle Lausitz, £65-£70), has curves like the Venus of Willendorf.

Katherine Cole profile picture credit: She Saw Things2024 has proved to be rough for wine, from plummeting Bordeaux prices to dire health warnings. In the US, per-capita consumption of wine is back at 2011 levels. But as we enter the year’s final stretch, I think of moulded plywood and feel hopeful. Economic and social constraints are forcing the wine industry to pare back and reset. And maybe that’s okay; maybe that’s making wine leaner and more flexible than ever.

The Champenoise are at odds over foil necks. Are they important to Champagne's image, or should we let them go in the name of sustainability? (And do you agree with @rubywelk and I that paper tabs just look better?) Listen to Ep. 152 of @The4Top : https://t.co/bnhCfCJlo9 https://t.co/XdxU3mAEHB

We want your input! Large-format wine bottles have some wild names. Is it time to rename them? Any suggestions? Let us know in the comments, and check out Ep. 147 of @The4Top: https://t.co/F9oEqFLmwC https://t.co/QkYBJYSdQD

We all have that one winemaker we absolutely adore. Would you put them in office if you had the chance? Listen to our latest ep of @The4Top here: https://t.co/F9oEqFKOH4 https://t.co/GLkWPOY3kz
