Fortune 500 used car retailer CarMax, headquartered in Goochland County, has chosen a new creative agency of record, leaving Richmond-based marketing and ad firm The Martin Agency, which held the account since 2019. The nation’s largest used car retailer announced Wednesday it has appointed 72andSunny’s Los Angeles office as its creative AOR “following a competitive pitch process.” CarMax started a U.S. media and creative agency review in December 2024.

MicroStrategy appears to have lost the coin toss — the bitcoin toss, that is. The world’s largest corporate bitcoin investor, Tysons-based MicroStrategy reported an expected first quarter loss in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday due to the falling value of its holdings in the cryptocurrency. After cresting at an all-time high of $100,000 in December 2024, bitcoin values fell below the $75,000 mark briefly on Monday.

Virginia Commonwealth University received state approval this week to buy Altria Group’s 450,000-square-foot research building in downtown Richmond. The Altria Center for Research and Technology, which opened in 2007, sits on more than four acres at 600 E. Leigh St. and is assessed for $275 million. Discussions between officials with VCU and Henrico County-based Fortune 500 tobacco manufacturer Altria and between VCU and state budget leaders were initially reported in October 2024.

Vidarr, which makes night vision goggles and other defense optical equipment, will invest $2.69 million over the next three years to open a manufacturing facility in Virginia Beach, a project estimated to create 40 jobs, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Friday. The New Hampshire company’s manufacturing facility is moving into a 16,410-square-foot building located at 2656 Lishelle Place, near the Oceana Naval Air Station.
