The city of Rifle passed another emergency ordinance Tuesday, May 7, to support Habitat for Humanity’s plan to build a modular housing factory on the Western Slope. The move updates a previous ordinance passed in January, when the City Council first agreed to serve as a conduit for up to $25 million in private activity bonds to help fund the 65,000-square-foot facility. The factory is expected to produce modular housing units for communities across western Colorado.

Parachute is a small town, and that close-knit feel extends into the halls of Grand Valley High School, where this year’s graduating class totals about 80 students. Among them are two best friends, Ean Olmstead and Craig Cotter, who have each chosen to attend military academies as they begin their college journeys.

The Garfield County Libraries have several events planned for the coming days, including community learning opportunities about reading, mustangs and hacks to save money. Adults are invited to a special in person craft event at the Rifle branch library. At 11 a.m. Monday in honor of Mother’s Day, use recycled books to create beautiful flowers. The event is bilingual and open to people 18 years or older.

The New Castle and Rifle police departments are having their bike rodeos in the later half of May so get your bicycles ready. Both bike rodeos will have a bike raffle, obstacle course, free BBQ lunch, free helmets, bike tune-ups and a chance to meet local officers from New Castle and Rifle. There will be vendors at both events, but they will be different. New Castle PD’s bike rodeo will have goodie bags to be given away, a dunk tank and a foam machine.
