Instead, many professors allow students to use AI or teach them how to improve AI-written essays. ALBANY — A charter school has designed a modern high school from scratch, rethinking everything from bathrooms to stairwells. It’s not often that a new high school is built in this area, rather than being relocated to an existing building. KIPP Capital Region is building its new high school on Northern Boulevard in Albany to replace its Troy Prep High School, housed inside a renovated warehouse in Troy. The new 96,000-square-foot, three-story Capital High School opens in August.

COLONIE — A transgender girl in Colonie is facing a Catch-22: If she competes with the boys, she could be accused of not being a real girl. If she competes with the girls, she may have an unfair advantage. In threading the needle, she has been tripped up over what happens before practice and meets: She uses the girls' locker room, a practice that has prompted a federal complaint. This year, the South Colonie school district student has been competing on the boys' track team.

ALBANY — The state Education Department offered Thursday to ban all school mascots that are connected to any racial or ethnic group, in response to an effort from the federal government to overturn the state's ban on mascots depicting Indigenous Peoples. The state made that offer in a letter to the U.S. Office of Civil Rights, which last week ordered the state to drop its ban.
