Caltha Wins BC’s Best, Will Open for Swae Lee at Modstock

Under the shimmering sunset hour on Thursday, Boston College’s Music Guild hosted their annual BC’s Best contest. Unlike previous years, the first opener of Modstock will be decided through a student open vote coordinated by Campus Activities Board (CAB) rather than through BC’s Best. Instead, the second opener was selected from one of the three bands performing at BC’s Best. This year’s winner, Caltha, is set to perform right before Swae Lee on May 1.

This Thursday, just minutes before the show’s scheduled start, Fulton 511 reached capacity as people struggled to find seats, resulting in all the walking room being occupied by standing audience members. Shovelhead’s “Best Of” show happens every three years, presenting the Boston College community with the group’s biggest and most popular sketch comedy pieces.

On Saturday, UPrising Dance Crew hosted their annual showcase, the Waves Show, at the Robsham Theater. As audience members filed in 30 minutes before the show began, non-stop chatter and excitement followed. UPrising is focused on an urban, hip-hop influence, incorporating a variety of styles and elements of dance such as concepts, visuals, and acrobatic stunts.

It’s all fun and games until talented bands and singer-songwriters get serious, competing to be crowned Boston College’s Best. Obstacle Monkey and Whistle Rock took home the win at this year’s competition in the band and singer-songwriter categories, respectively. BC’s Best is an annual music competition and a part of the Arts Festival. The competition was hosted in the Mod Lot on Thursday night with bands competing to be the opening act for Neon Trees at Modstock.

Cozy, moody, and embellished by twinkly lights, the O’Connell House hosted a spectacle on Thursday night. Boston College’s student radio station WZBC hosted its spring concert at the O’Connell House, featuring Shallow Alcove, Exit 18, and buffchick with her band. Audiences were welcomed into the O’Connell House with a warm fireplace and a merch stand that was selling graphic t-shirts, mug candles, and other merchandise.
