In the quiet gym of Coronado High School, the echoes of sneakers on polished wood carry the story of a boys basketball team finding its rhythm. At the center of it all stands Loxly Johnson, the Islanders’ six-foot senior guard. In basketball, players are often confined to traditional roles: the tallest man dominates near the rim while guards and wings patrol the perimeter, passing, dribbling and firing long-range shots. Johnson, a 6-foot senior guard, transcends these boundaries.

Nineteen-year-old Angel Gomez of Coronado finished fourth in his section in the men’s singles category at the 2024 World Bowls Junior Indoor Championship. Held from Dec. 2-8, the event took place at the Hong Kong Football Club in Causeway Bay, marking the first time the championship was hosted in Asia.

It’s the start of 2025 and that means resolutions, reflections and photo recaps are in full swing. I’ve never been a huge resolutions gal, but I am big on reflecting. And man, has 2024 been a crazy year – in a good way – both for me and our paper. You see, this January not only marks a key date in The Coronado News’ young life so far (a two-year birthday), but it also marks a year since I started a new position as editor-in-chief.

In 2000, Bob Syverson found himself at the door of a quiet Coronado home, dressed in a plush red suit, clutching a gift. He knocked on the door. A young woman answered. “Merry Christmas!” Syverson said, before stating the name of the gift’s intended recipient. The woman smiled. “That’s me,” she said, accepting the colorfully wrapped package.

Taking a step toward amending the Coronado Historical Preservation Program, the City Council certified an environmental report and directed staff to draft ordinances for formal adoption at its Dec. 3 meeting. The Historical Preservation Program focuses on preserving architecturally significant properties while giving homeowners clarity on remodeling rules.

Coronado’s City Council has approved a $9 million plan to bury overhead utility lines along First Street, from Alameda to D Avenue, in a trench. This decision was made during the Dec. 3 council meeting to improve both safety and aesthetics in the area. The First Street Underground Project, which is an effort of both the city and the Navy, will directly affect 79 homes.

High above the cobalt waters off Coronado Island, the “sleigh” hummed steadily at 4,000 feet. It wasn’t a reindeer-drawn marvel but a Cessna 206, its cabin carrying a single red-suited figure. Ron Lee – Santa for a day and master skydiver for 42 years — took one last look at the horizon before stepping into the crisp Dec. 4 air. The Pacific stretched below, mirroring his landing point along the Hotel del Coronado’s Paseo Lawn.

Each holiday season, the Hotel del Coronado dazzles visitors with its enchanting decorations, but this year promises a particularly cinematic experience. The 2024 theme, “Lights, Camera, Holiday,” pays homage to the hotel’s storied Hollywood ties, spotlighting the 65th anniversary of “Some Like It Hot,” the 1959 comedy classic starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, which was filmed on-site in 1958.

On the first Friday night of December, the heart of Coronado transforms into a festive tableau, with Rotary Plaza’s towering pine tree at its center. This year, the Coronado Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade on Dec. 6 will mark its 49th annual celebration. Behind the sparking lights and crowd gathering, lies an orchestration led by the Coronado Chamber of Commerce, the City of Coronado and Discover Coronado.

The John D. Spreckels Center is abuzz with quiet pride and community admiration, hosting its Celebrating Seniors exhibit — a tribute to Coronado’s elder residents. Curated under the leadership of the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission, Michelle Darnell, who leads Visual Arts Programs, said the exhibit emerged from an intersection of purpose and timing. The Spreckels Center recently reopened in June after needing extensive flood repairs after the Jan.
