In the quiet gym of Coronado High School, the echoes of sneakers on polished wood carry the story of a boys basketball team finding its rhythm. At the center of it all stands Loxly Johnson, the Islanders’ six-foot senior guard. In basketball, players are often confined to traditional roles: the tallest man dominates near the rim while guards and wings patrol the perimeter, passing, dribbling and firing long-range shots. Johnson, a 6-foot senior guard, transcends these boundaries.

Nineteen-year-old Angel Gomez of Coronado finished fourth in his section in the men’s singles category at the 2024 World Bowls Junior Indoor Championship. Held from Dec. 2-8, the event took place at the Hong Kong Football Club in Causeway Bay, marking the first time the championship was hosted in Asia.

It’s the start of 2025 and that means resolutions, reflections and photo recaps are in full swing. I’ve never been a huge resolutions gal, but I am big on reflecting. And man, has 2024 been a crazy year – in a good way – both for me and our paper. You see, this January not only marks a key date in The Coronado News’ young life so far (a two-year birthday), but it also marks a year since I started a new position as editor-in-chief.

In 2000, Bob Syverson found himself at the door of a quiet Coronado home, dressed in a plush red suit, clutching a gift. He knocked on the door. A young woman answered. “Merry Christmas!” Syverson said, before stating the name of the gift’s intended recipient. The woman smiled. “That’s me,” she said, accepting the colorfully wrapped package.
