The Lawn Bowling Green outside of John D. Spreckels Center is finally undergoing a turf replacement project following delays caused by a lawsuit and storm damage. The fungal issues, combined with the Jan. 22 deluge flooding the entire turf, resulted in the Lawn Bowling Green needing to be replaced. The fungus, known as puffball mushroom fungus, grows on live tree roots, forming mounds and disrupting the surface of the lawn.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors decided unanimously on Jan. 14 to hold a special election to fill the District 1 vacancy left when Nora Vargas abruptly stepped down weeks after winning the Nov. 5 election. Dozens of residents of District 1, which includes the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and National City and several south San Diego neighborhoods including Barrio Logan, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, came forward during public comment and said they preferred a special election.

The Coronado City Council has one vacant seat and local residents are lining up to apply for a position that will be filled through an appointment rather than a special election. It is anticipated that the City Council will vote on a vacancy appointment at the next regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 21. So far, 10 applicants have been recorded on the city website, three of whom were contestants in the Nov. 5 election: Laura Wilkinson Sinton, Mark Warner and Andrew Gade.

Just a couple hours away, the county of Los Angeles has turned into one of the worst wildfire disasters in the last few decades, and Coronado has made moves to help out. At 2 a.m. on Jan. 7, Coronado Fire Chief Jayson Summers sent out a unit of four firefighters as part of a San Diego County strike team of firefighters from San Diego, Poway, National City, Chula Vista and Coronado. The battalion chief of Poway has also deployed with the firefighters.

On Jan. 4, it was announced that former Coronado SEAL Team 1 leader Robert Kerrey would have the Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer named after him. It will be the USS Robert Kerrey (DDG 146). “This will be the first Navy vessel named in his honor,” said Carlos Del Toro, secretary of the Navy.
