    THUNDER BAY — Hundreds of firearms have been taken into custody by investigators during the course of 2024. Last year, through both front-line and intelligence investigations and more, TBPS (Thunder Bay Police Service) collected 267 authentic firearms. This is a huge rise compared to the 139 guns seized in 2023 — a 92 per cent increase. Numbers from Statistics Canada reveal that firearms-related crimes continue to increase in the city.

    SUPERIOR NORTH — Provincial police saw almost no change in the number of calls during last week's reporting period. OPP responded to 436 calls for service in the areas overseen by detachments in Nipigon, Marathon and Greenstone, compared to 438 last week. Police were busiest with property checks, issuing eTickets, conducting R.I.D.E. programs and providing community services. Almost half of the calls police attended resulted in charges being laid.

    THUNDER BAY — OPP saw a 21 per cent increaes in calls for service last week in Thunder Bay. Officers responded to 289 occurrences, compared to the 238 calls from the week before. The majority of incidents involved police responding to 131 eTicket calls, conducting 18 R.I.D.E. program checks, and attending 16 traffic complaint calls. OPP laid a total of 120 charges during this reporting period.

    NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO — OPP in Northwestern Ontario saw a small increase to the number of calls for service they received last week. Police responded to a total of 1,554 calls last week in the four anchor communities of Dryden, Kenora, Sioux Lookout, and Red Lake; this is an incease of just 25 calls across all four communities policed by the OPP compared to the previous week.

    THUNDER BAY — With speeds as high as 102 km/hour, city police say they were catching speeders at a rate of one every 10 minutes on Onion Lake Road on Wednesday morning. In the span of 40 minutes, Constable Tom Armstrong with the city police's Traffic Unit, says he stopped four vehicles who were observed by radar speeding well in excess of the posted speed limit; vehicles were clocked going 96, 90, 91 and 102 km/hr respectively when he initiated traffic stops.
