What just happened? On Monday, a heavily armed 28-year-old entered The Covenant School, a private Christian campus in Nashville, Tennessee, and killed three children and three staff members. The assailant, a woman who had identified as transgender and is believed to be a former student, was armed with two AR-style weapons and a handgun. She was killed by police at the scene. The Nashville police say the assailant had detailed maps of the school and had shot through a locked door to gain entry.

As kids, we told a fib: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Lived experience proves the opposite. Words hurt. Perhaps untrue words are the most harmful of all. Slander is often linked to violence in the Bible (Matt. 5:11; Eph. 4:31) because it’s an attempt to murder a person’s good name, to destroy a person’s life. If an employer believes false accusations made against an employee, an entire family can be thrown into destitution.

The West African wedding was as intense as the sun. The thatched walls of the church couldn’t contain the celebration. After a couple of hours, the music and dancing subsided. The bride and groom stood hand in hand in front of the pastor. He spoke the vows and the groom repeated them: “I take you to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward.”The pastor continued, “For richer or poorer.” Smirking, the groom replied, “For rich or richer!” The congregation erupted in laughter and cheers.

Inside the fortress of my heart, there was a heavily bolted door labeled “father issues.” After my father died in 2021, I gathered the courage to unlock the door and walk into the cobwebbed and haunted room. My father and I weren’t close. He and my mother divorced when I was 5. For 10 years afterward, I saw him sporadically. In the 20 years afterward, we spoke on the phone three times. I called him every time. He always ended the conversation sooner than I wanted.

I recently talked with a young woman serving in a new role as a part-time church music director. After spending a couple of Sundays at her parents’ larger church, she became discouraged in her efforts: “I just can’t produce something as grand as what they can, and I’m not even a professional musician.”I empathized as a fellow worship leader.
