After removing the stone, Jesus called with new creation power, “Lazarus, come out.” The heart that stopped four days before pulsed with new life. Lazarus walked out of his grave. Lazarus’s resurrection and gives a picture of what it is like for God to resurrect people who are dead in their sins spiritually. God takes what is dead and morally repugnant from sin and makes it into something alive and beautiful. Like any other six-year-old, I lived life to the fullest.

Missions is the invitation to participate in the gospel’s advance around the world. It’s the privilege to see God’s Word at work. But you don’t have to leave your country to see and participate in its powerful effect. We might be discouraged when we experience resistance to our witness from family, friends, and society. But the stories of the gospel’s spread in hard places should embolden us to continue sharing the gospel. A car pulled up beside me as I briskly walked down a street in East Asia.

A car pulled up beside me as I briskly walked down a street in East Asia. The driver said, “Get in.” I hesitated a moment. Who was this telling me to get in the car? What would happen if I did? I looked at my translator. She motioned for me to get in. She knew what was happening. Still a little unsure, I opened the car door and sat down. I was in this country to explore the possibilities of gospel work among an ethnic minority.

As goes divine simplicity, so goes classical theism. For some theologians, the affirmation of divine simplicity proves too much to bear, and the denial of such a doctrine requires them to dismiss classical theism as a whole. For many others, however, it was the discovery of divine simplicity that set them on their way to embracing the classical doctrine of God in all of its beauty. The doctrine of divine simplicity teaches that God is not made up of parts and that all that is in God is God.

When our family moved overseas, the ministry we joined was a dream scenario. We were going to help a young church with members who hungered for solid, biblical teaching. Pastors throughout the region visited the church to receive training. It looked like the kind of ministry God could use to bring revival and reformation to a nation plagued by the prosperity gospel.

C. S. Lewis once wrote about the quality of a story’s “atmosphere.” A strong story captures the spaces, locations, and situations that provide the setting of the drama. It draws the reader in; you almost feel like you’re there. Courtney Anderson’s To the Golden Shore: The Life of Adoniram Judson is a classic biography of the great missionary to Burma (1812–1850). Although not a purely historical treatment, its atmosphere is rich.

Even his name sounds mythical: Athanasius. But when I imagine Athanasius, I don’t see some Gimli battling hordes of Arian orcs. When I picture the Greek speaking “dwarf,” I see an old magi adoring the Christ. Athanasius strikes me as something like the representation of the magi in Albrecht Dürer’s Adoration of the Magi, stooping down in enraptured adoration of the Christ child.

Knowledge theory has traditionally placed a premium on the explicit definition of skills. Although in-demand skills are recognized as inherently valuable, the less specific their definition, the less value they carry. In today's world, a higher education degree or “related experience,” without a clearly defined skill set doesn’t suffice.

I took a deep breath and opened the door to my daughter’s room. This was going to be a tough conversation. She looked at me with tear-filled eyes and said, “I hate this place.” She wasn’t alone. I was wrestling with similar feelings. Every day assaulted me with new sights, smells, and sounds. The world spun around me. For the cross-cultural worker, the lack of the familiar often evokes internal chaos. The specific stressors vary from place to place. But the feelings are the same.
