First homes grant scrapped: 'It sets you back'

A prospective first-home buyer says he is gutted the government has scrapped the First Homes Grants scheme, and fears he'll now miss out on the house he was looking at. The government yesterday confirmed it was ending the initiative, with applications closing at 1pm - 30 minutes before the announcement was made. The scheme paid out grants of $5000 for an existing home - or $10,000 for a new-build - to first-home buyers whose income was less than $95,000, or $150,000 as a household.

Labour MP Duncan Webb has apologised after tweeting a jibe about ACT leader David Seymour, asking if he does not like hummus because it is too close to Hamas. Seymour had earlier criticised the Middle Eastern dip as part of his campaign against so-called woke food - when rolling out the new school lunch programme. In a statement to RNZ, Webb said his tweet was an error of judgement and he promptly deleted it. Labour leader Chris Hipkins said he told Webb indirectly the tweet was inappropriate.

The final check of the official election result was done in a few hours, under extreme pressure, on the day it was announced, an investigation has found. The rushed assessment, which failed to identify multiple errors in the official results, would normally take two days. The auditor general's inquiry also identified a further problem with the official count, which saw some apparent dual votes be included.

Rongotai MP Julie Anne Genter has apologised in Parliament after National accused her of intimidating and attacking one of its ministers in the House. A spokesperson for the Green Party told RNZ her actions were "unacceptable" and fell short of the standards they expect of their MPs.As MPs were debating roading projects as part of the Annual Review - Transport on Wednesday night, Genter rose from her seat and walked across the chamber towards National's Matt Doocey.
