AbstractAlcohol-related harm, a major cause of disease burden globally, affects people along a spectrum of use. When a harmful pattern of drinking is present in the absence of significant behavioral pathology, low-intensity brief interventions that provide information about health consequences of continued use provide large health benefits.

This review investigates the core processes that make mindfulness-based treatments for substance use disorders effective. It specifically investigates the rigor of the methods used to investigate these processes, as well as how these studies contextualized processes within the sociocultural contexts of participants. The review identified various processes that make mindfulness treatments effective.
