AbstractHeterostructures obtained by combining two-dimensional (2D) sheets are widely investigated as a platform for designing new materials with customised characteristics. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are often combined with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to enhance their excitonic resonances. However, little is known about how stacking affects excitons and plasmons in TMDCs or their mutual interactions.

The recognition of various intermolecular forces that bind molecules in solids and liquids has led to the modern concept of surface tension.42 Surface tension is mainly dependent on the forces of attraction between particles within a given liquid and the gas, solid, or liquid contacting with it. As shown in Fig. 2(a), the molecules located away from the air/liquid interface are equally pulled in all directions from neighboring liquid molecules, leading to a net force of zero.
