At the time of this review’s publishing, the 2025 summer film season has been dominated by two live-action remakes, neither of which seem to add anything novel to their original counterparts. The formula’s become all-too-familiar; a remake sidelines creativity for perceived familiarity.

After watching enough biopics, you start to feel as if the ‘subject of the day’ has been plugged into a non-changing algebraic formula—the narrative beats and stylistic features always feel the same.

Web Exclusive Last year, in what very well may be one of the best filmgoing experiences of my life, I had the opportunity to catch the new restoration of Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at Bologna’s Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival. The film was introduced by La La Land director Damien Chazelle, who perfectly captured what makes Demy’s film so magical, and one of the best films ever made.
