The UK jobs market is showing signs of greater stability with some employers “feeling more ready to hire”, new data has suggested. In February, there were 1,550,191 active job postings, a rise of 0.1% from January, according to the latest Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC)/ Lightcast monthly Labour Market Tracker. During the same period, the number of new listings was 681,898, down 10.8% from the previous month.

According to the Resolution Foundation, a downturn in hiring has meant the UK’s economic outlook has deteriorated markedly since the autumn budget in October 2024.

NHS England’s workforce will be cut by half, with around 6,500 jobs to go, in a bid to save at least £175m annually. The government plans aim to “avoid duplication” with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and will see the health service enter “a period of critical transformation”. Meanwhile, a string of NHS directors will be stepping down, with chief executive Amanda Pritchard and medical director Sir Stephen Powis leading the way.

Mid-sized UK businesses are slow to boost ethnic diversity on their boards, a new race representation report has found. The government-backed Parker Review showed that while “significant progress” had been made, nearly one in five of FTSE 250 companies had not made improvements. A total of 46 firms – which had a December 2024 deadline to appoint one or more ethnic minority director – ignored the survey or still had all-white boardrooms.
