Piling is underway in Melton, Victoria to form foundations for two rail bridges that will permanently separate trains and vehicles. The rail line is being raised at Coburns Road and Exford Road, with a new accessible Melton Station with four platforms being built as part of the project. The new platforms will accommodate trains starting and terminating at Melton as well as Ballarat services.

The design and pre-construction contract for the main works package on the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project has been awarded to MIC Group’s CPB Contractors and UGL, as part of the ActivUs Alliance. CPB Contractors and UGL, alongside ACCIONA, SMEC and WSP, will work in partnership with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail to progress design and project planning activities.

The new Seymour-Avenel Road bridge in Victoria is open to traffic, following the completion of works by Inland Rail. The previous bridge across the rail corridor was replaced to allow the passage of double stacked freight trains. The new structure is 35 metres long and stands 3.2 metres higher than the old bridge, and the approach embankments were created using 170,000 tonnes of locally sourced soil.

Rail travel is one of the most energy-efficient forms of transport – with only 2.6 per cent of Australia’s transport greenhouse gas emissions attributable to passenger and freight rail. Greenhouse gas emissions per passenger kilometre for rail transport is up to five times less than that of car transport, according to the Australasian Railway Association (ARA), and moving freight on rail produces 16 times less carbon pollution compared to trucks.
