The first time I listened to Sufjan Stevens, I was fumbling around in a car with my first boyfriend. It was the winter of 2017 and we were 19, living with our respective parents in Ottawa and he wasn’t out to his family, so the only places we could hook up were in parking lots. We would sprawl and tangle across the back seat of his mom’s old station wagon.

I played baseball and soccer, and I took lessons for tap dancing, piano, vocals and acting.

Being the homosexual I am, I spend my year chasing the Oscars. In the spring, I track what Sundance releases have been acquired by big studios; in the summer, I study what’s popping at the Cannes Film Festival, which generally launches the most lauded and visible global films; in the fall, I spend a week and a half at the Toronto International Film Festival catching anything with awards buzz and in the winter, I analyze the Oscar precursors.

I’ve always loved horror. My therapist would say it’s because I suppressed a lot of my emotions as a kid and can achieve catharsis only by consuming extreme and graphic material. My bisexual friends would say it’s because I’m a Scorpio. Either way, I’ve seen so many horror films that I’ve grown desensitized. Just the scariest stuff gets a rise out of me. Over the past decade, there’s been a lot of scary stuff.
