The Highland Council has issued its support to a Scottish Government proposal to give local authorities the power to create a cruise ship levy in the area. A meeting of the council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee on Thursday (29 May) heard that such a levy could provide additional funds to mitigate the impacts of tourism and ensure the area remains a world leading and sustainable tourism destination.

Efforts to devote funds to those most in need have been supported by Highland Council’s Nairnshire Area Committee. Yesterday (Monday 26 May) the committee agreed to funding of £2,000 from the Nairn and Auldearn Poor Fund to the Nairn and Nairnshire’s ‘People’s Pot’. The Nairnshire Area Committee has power to allocate these funds.

At today’s meeting (Monday 26 May), members were asked to note the final budget allocation for Dingwall and Seaforth area for 2024/25; works completed on the approved list to date; and additional works identified and prioritised throughout the year.

A statement of community priorities and aspirations for the Nairnshire area has been backed by Highland Councillors. At a meeting of the Nairnshire Area Committee on Monday (26 May) members agreed to adopt the ‘Our Nairnshire’ plan as one source of evidence of community aspiration, to inform wider decision making about spatial planning, service delivery, options for asset management, development and investment towards the continuous improvement and wellbeing of the Nairn and Cawdor Ward.

Events to mark the 800th anniversary of Dingwall’s status as a Royal Burgh have been boosted following Highland Council’s approval of £51,000 in community regeneration funds. Members of the Council’s Dingwall and Seaforth Committee agreed today (Monday 26 May) to allocate £51,000 to Fèis Rois, the local youth and arts organisation which will lead several community events and activities throughout the milestone year of 2026.
