Automobiles have come a long ways in the last 120 years. The modern vehicle has comforts like air conditioning, radio and navigation systems the drivers of the early 20th century couldn’t even dreamed of. And the cars are more powerful with bigger engines providing higher speeds than dreamed of back about 1905. The community of Jamestown seemed to have a rather unique test to determine the power of a new car brought into town back then.

JAMESTOWN — Legislators from District 12 and District 29 point to the bill delivering property tax relief North Dakota residents as the most important accomplishment of the session that ended on May 3. “Mostly we worked on the property tax relief,” said Sen. Cole Conley, R-Jamestown. “It was the biggest subject of the session.” Sen. Terry Wanzek, R-Jamestown, said it was a long and difficult process. “It took a while, but we finally got to property tax relief for homeowners,” he said.

Russian thistle was a problem around North Dakota in 1895. In fact, it is still sometimes a problem and is sometimes known as tumbleweeds. It is very similar to kochia, and both are considered invasive species. These weeds are native to places in Europe and Asia including the Russian steppe. They may have been imported to the United States with flax seeds brought in by immigrants from that area in the 1870s. When these seeds hit North Dakota, they grew like, well, weeds.

Jamestown had its first casualty of the Spanish-American War in April 1899: Lt. Dorman Baldwin, of Company H. North Dakota Volunteers received what was described as a serious wound to the leg in an exchange of gunfire with Philippine natives about 10 miles east of Manila. Two other members of the North Dakota Volunteers from Devils Lake received lesser wounds in the exchange. Baldwin was born in upstate New York in 1871.
