VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — St. Aloysius High School has named Carson Smith and Samantha Edwards as the 2024 Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The honors were announced Wednesday night at the school’s annual athletic banquet. Smith, a multi-sport standout, excelled in football and baseball. As the starting quarterback, he led the Flashes to the playoffs. On the diamond, he posted a .386 batting average—highest in Warren County—along with 39 hits and 30 RBIs, helping St. Aloysius finish 17-14.

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)—The Warren Central High School football team defeated Madison-Ridgeland Academy 28-14 in their spring game on Thursday. “It was a good win, but we made a few mistakes that we have to work on,” quarterback Nash Morgan said. “We’re going to keep working and fix those mistakes so we can better ourselves.”Morgan’s pass was picked off early in the game, but the Viking defense was able to get WC back on offense after a few plays.

The senior Warren Central High School standout chose to continue her academic and athletic career at Belhaven University. “I thought I was getting rid of softball, so when I got the opportunity to continue playing it was just too good to turn down,” Parks said.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Mississippi Appellate Court vacated two charges of sexual battery and two life sentences for Vicksburg native Carl DeAnthony Smith due to lack of evidence earlier this week. Smith currently remains in prison on 10 counts of possession of child pornography. The courts also ordered that he be resentenced on those charges.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Belhaven Athletics) — Nine members of the Belhaven Softball team have been named to the Collegiate Conference of the South All-Conference teams as announced by the league on Wednesday. The Blazers saw five players named to the All-CCS First Team including CCS Player of the Year Ellie Jones, three named to the All-CCS Second Team and one named on the All-CCS Sportsmanship team.

RIPLEY, Miss. (VDN) — AMississippi High School baseball coach has passed away at the age of 40. Ripley High School announced the news about their Head Coach, Joel Gafford. “In our grief over losing coach Joel Gafford, our community has shown up with love and strength,” the post read. “To every counselor, minister, youth director, and friend who stood beside us this morning – thank you. Your compassion is carrying us forward.”Gafford took over as Head Coach in 2010 at the age of 25.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Warren Central High School football player Carmelo Clark has received his first official scholarship offers. The offensive lineman has now received offers to play at Hinds Community College and East Central Community College. Clark played a big role in WC’s success last season under Head Coach Josh Morgan. He blocked for the team that had a total of 2,461 rushing yards and 1,413 passing yards.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Reginald Harris, Senior Pastor of Bright Morning Star M. B. Church, passed away. Harris served as Pastor for over 20 years at the church. A graduate of Vicksburg High School, Pastor Harris was inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Hall of Fame last year. He was a 3-year starter in football and baseball. Pastor Harris was the captain of Vicksburg High School’s 1984 district six championship football team and was a catalyst to their #4 ranking in Mississippi.

PORT GIBSON, Miss. (VDN) — On May 6, 2026, Chief Russell Dorsey with the Port Gibson Police Department responded to reports of a male walking near City Hall with a rifle. Upon arrival, Chief Russell Dorsey observed a male subject walking openly in the street carrying an AR-12 assault-style rifle. The subject, later identified as Cortland Holmes, was safely disarmed and taken into custody without incident by Chief Dorsey. No injuries were reported, and the scene was quickly secured.

PORT GIBSON, Miss. (VDN) — A Port Gibson murder suspect has been denied bond and his charge have been upgraded to Capital Murder. 20-year-old D’Onee Edwards was arrested on Saturday for the murder of 22-year-old Larry Mosley Jr. of Edwards, MS. Edwards went before Judge Mareesha Odom on Monday where she denied his bail.
