BOSTON — Fed up with war, Lysistrata leads both Athenian and rival Spartan women in a sex strike. For Aristophanes, over two millennia ago, that was the premise for a bawdy punfest of a comedy. For composer/librettist Mark Adamo, the weak-kneed standoff between lusty women and their agonizingly erect men not only tries comically to end a war but also attempts to engender a broader discussion of fate and identity. Sometimes it succeeds.

BOSTON — Die tote Stadt, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s 1920 post-Freudian operatic psycho-drama, plays like Strauss, reads like Ibsen, and sounds more like Puccini than Schoenberg. Whatever the apt comparisons, it demands to be an organic unit: theater, music, ideas, text. The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s semi-staged concert version, starring soprano Christine Goerke and tenor David Butt Philip and led by music director Andris Nelsons, gets at most of that, but not all of it.

Uglies is based off of a series of Scott Westerfield novels and takes place in a dystopian future, only it doesn’t seem dystopian. Society has gone away from evil fossil fuels and uses a special white lotus flower as a source of energy instead.
