I know folks who can get by on four or five hours of sleep, then function like normal. I am not one of those people. If I have less than eight hours, I run into door jambs, walls, trip for seemingly no reason and have difficulty remembering basic information, like my name. Overall, I do sleep well, thankfully.

I feel fortunate to live in an older neighborhood with mature trees. We have a plethora of birds that come and go depending on the season, as well as the year-long residents. Over the years, I have written about xeriscape gardening and pollinator landscaping, but was surprised to learn that I had never discussed plants for our beautiful feathered friends. Native plants are key to designing a bird-friendly landscape. These plants have adapted to our climate, soil and environment.

In last week’s column, we discussed planting the right tree in the right place. In our semi-arid environment, it is also important to consider choosing plants that tend to be more fire resistant if they will be near the home. We recently received a free juniper for Earth Day. I was researching the tree to determine where to plant it when I learned they are considered highly flammable. Junipers, along with pines, firs and spruces, are not recommended to be planted near the home.
