The public hearing set for June 3 by the Walworth County commissioners has been postponed. The hearing had originally been set for commissioners to receive public input on the preliminary Walworth County Jail plans. However, on a social media post, the county stated on May 29 it was postponed. “The public hearing on June 3 for jail discussion has been postponed,” it the post read. At the time of the deadline, a new date has not yet been set.

The Walworth County Commission has set a public hearing regarding the preliminary proposed plans for a jail facility. During the bi-monthly county meeting held May 20 at the courthouse in Selby, the commission discussed the proposed plans for a new Walworth County jail and set a public hearing for 10:30 a.m. June 3 at the courthouse. “I have the courtroom reserved for that time,” said District 4 Commissioner Duane Mohr.

During the Walworth County Commission meeting April 22 held at the courthouse in Selby, Emergency Management Manager Jeff Jensen demonstrated the county’s newest tool – the DJI Matric M30T.

A restoration project will be taking place on the “old section” of the AH Brown Library in Mobridge. The city council approved a contract with Mid-Continental Restoration Co., Inc. during its Feb. 5 meeting held at the city hall in Mobridge. The quote, dated Jan. 15, 2025, was for the amount of $47,857. Finance Officer Heather Beck said the main portion of the project would be repointing on the old portion of the librarying. Repointing is the process of repairing existing masonry joints.

The City of Mobridge’s insurance rates are set to increase by 27% in 2025 due mainly to commercial property and law enforcement. During the Feb. 5 Mobridge City Council meeting, Financial Officer Heather Beck presented on behalf of Jesse Konold of Bridgemark Insurance Solutions (Bain Agency – Key Insurance) who was unable to attend the meeting due to illness. Beck explained the total cost of the proposed insurance coverage was for $144,686, which was a 27% increase over 2024.

The Walworth County Landfill made a profit of $179,654 during the year of 2024. During the commission meeting Feb. 4, which was held at the courthouse in Selby, District 2 Commissioner Duane Mohr shared the landfill report with the good news. Mohr explained the income for the year at the landfill was $739,728 with expenses being $560,074, which left the landfill with “a plus of $179,654.”“That’s a pretty good profit,” said District 5 Commissioner Justin Jungwirth.

The Walworth County treasurer’s office is urging drivers to plan ahead as the motor vehicle transactions will be down from Feb. 13 through 18. In a notice from the treasurer’s office issued Feb. 3, it stated beginning at 4 p.m. Feb. 13 through Feb. 18, the county will not be handling motor vehicle transactions due to a system switch. Walworth County will be switching from the SDCars system to the new 605Drive system, which will cause the services to be down throughout the period.

A second reading of a new short-term rental ordinance failed in Mobridge due to a lack of a majority vote by the council. During the City of Mobridge council meeting Jan. 8 held at city hall, ordinance 24-02 failed its second reading outlining regulations for short-term property rentals within city limits after the council was split 2-2. A motion was originally called by Ward 3 Councilmember Jade Mound and seconded by Ward 3 Councilmember Randy Carlson.

The Mobridge police chief and financial officer are the top paid employees in the city, according to salaries posted to follow state law. During their first meeting of the year, the city of Mobridge approved resolution 25-01, which publicly publishes the pay of all city employees. Salaried employeesMobridge Police Chief Shawn Madison was the top paid employee coming in at $97,415 a year, and Finance Officer Heather Beck was the second highest paid at $93,577 a year.
