Residents of Moss Vale in the New South Wales Southern Highlands say they have been vindicated after the state's Independent Planning Commission (IPC) rejected plans for a plastic recycling facility in the area. The proposed facility, which aimed to process 120,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year, faced overwhelming opposition from locals. Sam Sevieri, who was involved in the campaign against it, said the decision was a great relief.

The University of Wollongong has announced further details of its planned cuts to academic staff numbers. UOW said the final plan will see the loss of 91.6 full time equivalent positions to achieve a cost savings of $21 million in recurrent spending. The Interim Vice Chancellor, John Dewar said he is unable to confirm the final number of academic job losses. UOW has blamed a drop in international enrolments due to federal government restrictions for the cuts.

Laying claim to the technology that could crack green steelmaking in Australia was a tantalising prospect for any state government. Earlier this year Australia's largest steelmaker, BlueScope Steel, announced a new partnership with iron ore heavyweights Rio Tinto and BHP. They planned to build a furnace capable of turning Pilbara ore into green iron — the feed stock for zero emissions steel. New Wales South, South Australia, and Western Australia made pitches for the project.
