For weeks, people asked me about what was going on in Yankton. Specifically, they wondered why Yankton had so many candidates this year for both the City Commission (nine candidates for three slots) and school board (five hopefuls for two seats) spring races. It was a surprising development, quite frankly. I told them the truth: I really didn’t know. Usually, such a surge of interest is driven by contentious issues, but that didn’t seem to be the case this time.

Our newspaper’s technological infrastructure (for lack of a better or more impressive description) received an upgrade this week as a new server was installed, but as I write this, it hasn’t been a seamless transition. There have been various glitches and confounding surprises that defy our understanding as we switch to the new network. In short, it’s been typical computer weirdness.

Caroline Ver Mulm, right, a volunteer worker/ambassador with the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR), guides her kayak out from under the bridge at the Westside Park pond in Yankton. Trailing her are Luke Youmans (left) of the Yankton Department of Parks and Recreation and Tom Downs of the MNRR. The event was held as a test run for holding kids’ kayaking clinics at Westside Park this year instead of Lake Yankton.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting the box. At a jobs fair for former Cimpl’s Meatpacking workers held Tuesday at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center, one of the first things I encountered — amid the rows of tables and all the people seeking jobs talking with all the people looking for workers — was a small box wrapped in red that sat atop a table covered similarly in red.

I've been hearing anecdotal reports (from two relatives who bought vehicles Saturday) that car dealerships were busy this weekend because people are trying to bear the tariffs. Has anyone else encountered this?

An NAIA District 12 reference. I haven't even thought of that in years.

Houston’s Kelvin Sampson was the head coach at NAIA Montana Tech from 1981-85. He led the Orediggers to two NAIA District 12 championship game appearances, losing in ‘83 and ‘84 to Northern State College. Sampson will coach in the NCAA championship on Monday. So there’s that. https://t.co/MznK0OztnN
