    LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed into law Wednesday a measure banning transgender students from girls’ sports, making the state the latest to keep transgender athletes from competing on women’s and girls’ teams. Pillen signed the law flanked by dozens of lawmakers, women athletes and other advocates — including former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, who has made a name for herself as a vocal advocate of banning transgender athletes from women’s sports.

    Yankton area youth have a chance to participate in Yankton’s Safety City program this summer, with the annual program kicking off Tuesday, June 3. Kayla Loecker, a Lincoln Elementary teacher and Safety City coordinator, told the Press & Dakotan openings are still available for some of the classes. Safety City was started in Yankton in 1995 thanks to a grant received through the Department of Public Safety for which the Yankton Police Department applied.

    SCOTLAND — A southeast South Dakota healthcare facility is slated to become the state’s first Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) this summer. Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Avera in Scotland will transition from a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) status to a REH designation, with this switch scheduled to take effect on July 1.

    In the wake of this week’s state penitentiary assaults and drug busts, Yankton Police Chief Jason Foote and other state task force members are continuing their focus on prison safety. Gov. Larry Rhoden appointed Foote, president of the South Dakota Police Chiefs Association, to the Prison Reset Committee. The 22-member body was formed after the 2025 Legislature rejected a proposed $825 million project in Lincoln County.
