New Jersey may be one of the most diverse states in the nation, but nearly 45% of the seats on its government boards and commissions are filled by white men, according to a first-of-its-kind report commissioned by lawmakers. The study, called “From Data to Diversity,” said women and all racial minorities are underrepresented on hundreds of government-appointed boards and New Jersey needs to make major changes to fix the imbalance.

She knew she’d been raped. But, she said she didn’t know what to do next. The young, married mother was a Democratic candidate running for town council in a recent election. And the man whose apartment she woke up in was a fellow candidate trying to get elected in a nearby New Jersey town. The pair had been campaigning together on the Democratic ticket, along with other candidates in their county in the run-up to Election Day.

Women make up 51% of the population in New Jersey yet only about 30% are serving in elective office across municipal, county, state and congressional government, according to released by Rutgers University Thursday. The study also found white men comprise 27% of the population, but are “by far the most overrepresented group in New Jersey’s political offices.” Seven in 10 are mayors in municipalities with more than 30,000 population are white men.
