There’s good news in Gov. Phil Murphy‘s proposed budget for the one million people in New Jersey who are poor, disabled and otherwise uninsured and those who rely on the Department of Human Services. The meager reimbursement for doctors who take Medicaid patients would rise, as would the hourly wage for workers in group homes taking care of people with mental illness and autism to an average of $21 an hour.

He was self-effacing, funny and always curious. And sometimes outraged. But Matt Arco, a political reporter for NJ Advance Media and The Star-Ledger, was always on top of his game, whether staking out the governor, finding humor in some political gaffe, or shrugging off the comments when he showed up as the only reporter wearing shorts and a T-shirt in a hot-as-hell press gaggle during the summertime budget shutdowns outside the Trenton Statehouse.

Hospitals in New Jersey rank third best in the nation for protecting patients from falls, medical errors, infections and other mishaps that may leave them sicker than before their admission, according to the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety report card. None of the 66 acute care hospitals graded received a D or an F. Only Utah and Rhode Island had a greater percentage of hospitals that earned an A. New Jersey is also home to 18 hospitals that have earned an A since 2023.

For years it “siphoned” millions of dollars of Medicaid funds out of the home and to various side businesses, a state watchdog found, “leaving residents to live in a dismal, understaffed, and under-resourced facility.”And in December, acting State Comptroller Kevin Walsh moved to kick South Jersey Extended Care, its owner and those associated with its operations from the state’s Medicaid program.
