A new Holmes County residential treatment center for child victims of sex trafficking accepted its first two survivors a month ago. Experts there aim to help them untangle the trauma they experienced. The founder of Safe Harbor Ohio, which is in an undisclosed location to ensure survivors’ safety, said the need is great. “Trauma can be passed down from generation to generation,” said founder and CEO Melissa Brown.

The Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood on Cleveland's East Side has faced a lot of neglect over the years, but over the past decade, it has undergone major revitalization, thanks to residents, faith leaders and community organizations. This effort began back in 2013, after a request to pray for Rosehill Avenue came to Pastor Ernest Fields, of Calvary Hill Church of God in Christ.

The Cleveland Charge is likely on the move again. Cleveland City Council will consider a measure at Monday night's meeting to allow the Cavaliers' G League team to move to Public Auditorium Downtown from the Wolstein Center. The six-year agreement, which begins in September for the 2024-2025 season, requires the Charge to make $3 million in improvements to Public Auditorium and also pay for labor during each game.

The city of Cleveland has cordoned off the area around St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral on Starkweather Avenue after a member of the church told the city one of the domes was swaying. The historic church on the city's West Side was damaged in a fire on Tuesday. The church and some adjacent properties were evacuated "out of an abundance of caution," according to a statement from a city spokesperson.

Roofers accidentally ignited a fire at a historic church in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, according to the Cleveland Division of Fire. St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral on Starkweather Avenue sustained Kearns an estimated $1 million in damage, said John Kearns, assistant information director of the Cleveland Division of Fire. Damage includes smoke damage and water damage. The structure, he said, is sound. No one was injured.

Heavy traffic is expected to flow in and out of Northeast Ohio over the Memorial Day weekend. The Ohio Department of Transportation and State Highway Patrol are working to make travel as easy and safe as possible. ODOT is halting many of its road projects for the long weekend, said spokesperson Matt Bruning. "We will remove as many barrels [and] suspend as many projects as we can,” he said, noting it's a record year for roadwork. “Unfortunately, we can't do that in every situation.

The University of Akron has a new president. Robert Nemer is replacing current president Gary Miller effective immediately. Miller will retire in October. The university board of trustees approved the appointment Wednesday after conducting an expedited search for a new president, according to a press release. Nemer, who is the current dean of the UA College of Business, was the best choice, the board said. Nemer is a two-time UA alumnus.

Jean Carden keeps a newspaper clipping of her granddaughter’s gymnastics meet tucked between the pages of her Bible. “I just loved it when I opened up the paper, and I saw a picture of Dani in her gymnastic pose,” Carden said. Carden subscribed to The Louisville Herald, the paper that covered her granddaughter's gymnastics achievements, from the 1990s until it stopped covering news in this small Ohio town and production ceased in July 2023.
