U.S. President Donald Trump floated another possible pause on automobile tariffs after 25 per cent duties were placed on vehicles and auto part imports earlier this month. When asked about short-lived product exemptions in the Oval Office today, Trump says he is looking at something to help car companies. He pointed specifically to companies that manufacture vehicles in Canada and Mexico. Trump says those companies may need more time to adjust supply chains back to America.

This is the opposite of what Mexico and Canada’s chief negotiators said in Washington recently — which is that the US came to the table suggesting a short term trade deal for USMCA https://t.co/RzUJIMqnLV

So what’s actually in place today? 10% universal tariff on nearly every country. 125% tariff on China. 25% tariff on all steel, aluminum and automobiles. 25% tariff on non-USMCA goods from Canada and Mexico. Also Beijing’s 84% tariffs on US products. Still in a global trade war.

White House clarification. 10% baseline tariff remains in place (90-day pause only on "reciprocal" -- so those countries hit with the biggest duties.) Nothing has changed for Canada. Still have 25% on non-CUSMA imports, steel, aluminum and autos.
