A new electric bin lorry trial hopes to benefit the environment and the council coffers. The vehicle is 50% more expensive than the equivalent diesel model but Wiltshire Council hopes to prove it will be cost effective in the long-term. The Volvo FE Low Entry Cab RCV bin lorry is the first in the country and will soon be collecting rubbish in Calne and Chippenham.

A new £1m machine will help boost Swindon's recycling rate and help it become greener, a councillor has said. A baler, which turns dry waste materials such as plastic and metals into bales, is now up and running at Swindon's household recycling centre. It is hoped the machine will help lift the town's recycling rate, which is currently at 38% - well below the government target of 65%.

Pedestrians will have better access to a town centre for the festive shopping season because of progress made on a multi-million pound construction project. Work began on Swindon's £33m Bus Boulevard scheme in April 2022, with pedestrians facing long diversions and drivers suffering traffic disruption since September 2022 when Fleming Way was closed. However, from 5 December, people will once again be able to walk directly into the town centre from the current bus station.

A group set up in memory of a teenager who was murdered with a knife is working with police to find out how safe members of the local community feel. Owen's World works to raise awareness of knife crime after Owen Dunn, 18, was stabbed in Swindon in December 2022. Family friend and CEO of the not-for-profit company, Joanne Davis, said that the survey, launched earlier this month, has found "not a lot of people feel safe" and even children have a lack of trust in the police.

Plans intended to transform Swindon town centre into a more vibrant place to live, work and invest are to go before the council next week. The ‘Heart of Swindon’ document includes plans to build up to 5,000 new homes, changing the town's skyline. In a move to encourage investment and business confidence Swindon Borough Council also intends to invest in a multi-million pound entertainment venue.
