1. Introduction Stroke is the second global cause of both disability and mortality (1). Approximately 85% of all strokes are classified as ischemic strokes (2), and approximately 20% of ischemic strokes are linked to carotid atherosclerosis (3). At present, the degree of carotid stenosis is essential in determining the type of (secondary) stroke prevention treatment.
