As Hartford Athletic surged toward a playoff berth at the end of last season, winning or drawing in 13 of its final 16 games, fans were thrilled that, playoffs or not, better times seemed ahead. What a difference a few months makes. Athletic (1-0-4) stumbled out of the gate this season, losing each of its first four USL games and falling to lower-league Portland Hearts of Pine in the U.S. Open Cup. In the process, Hartford scored just one league goal.

Former UConn men’s basketball guard Ahmad Nowell will transfer to VCU, he announced on Instagram Monday. The 6-foot, 195-pound freshman from Philadelphia averaged 6.5 minutes in 18 games for the Huskies last season, posting 1.5 points and 1.1 assists per. Nowell was a highly-rated recruit coming out of high school, ranking as the 8th-best guard in the country and No. 36 overall in ESPN’s Top 100. He chose UConn over Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia.

Red Sox fans in Hartford will get a good look at the team’s pitching staff this week at Dunkin Park. Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello and Liam Hendriks will all be making appearances for the Portland Sea Dogs this week as the Red Sox’s Double A affiliate plays the Yard Goats. All are nearly ready to return to the major leagues from various injuries. Giolito, 30, missed the entire 2024 season after having an “internal brace” procedure, which is an alternative to Tommy John reconstructive surgery.

UConn said Monday that the federal government had revoked the visas of 13 members of its university community, including 12 students and one in a postgraduate professional program.
