    DeKALB – Residents in one of DeKalb’s largest rental buildings are without hot water Monday, according to a news release from the city. City officials as of about 11:30 a.m. estimated hot water would be restored by the end of the business day Monday to The Terraces of DeKalb, 1100 W. Lincoln Highway, formerly Lincoln Tower. “Landlords are required by City code to provide residents with hot water,” City officials wrote in a news release.

    SYCAMORE – A Somonauk 19-year-old was sentenced this week to 25 years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping in connection to the repeated sexual assault of a minor, court records show. Franklin E. Tooley was enrolled at Somonauk High School when he was arrested March 24, 2023. He initially was detained without release at the River Valley Juvenile Justice Center in Joliet, records show. Tooley pleaded guilty on April 7 to one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony.

    SYCAMORE – Jonathan D. Hurst has asked a DeKalb County judge to reconsider the two life sentences she handed him last month for the violent murders of Sycamore elderly mother and son Patricia Wilson and Robert Wilson, court records show. Hurst’s defense lawyer, Chip Criswell of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, filed a motion April 3 asking Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick to reconsider Hurst’s consecutive life prison sentences.

    DeKALB – Machinery inside an industrial building in downtown DeKalb caught fire Tuesday night, and the cause remains under investigation, authorities said Wednesday. Crews from the DeKalb Fire Department responded at about 8:33 p.m. Tuesday to Nehring Electrical Works, 813 E. Locust St., DeKalb, for reports of smoke in the building, according to a news release from the fire department. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming through an overhead door of the single-story building.

    Two incumbents were ousted. Newcomers took top votes. And one race is separated by a single vote. Here’s the unofficial election results for Park Board races in DeKalb County, including in the cities of DeKalb and Sycamore and Franklin Township. Vote tallies won’t be certified until April 15. Mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day, April 1, also will be added. Voters chose their preferred candidates for three open seats on the Board of Commissioners, all newbies who ousted two sitting incumbents.
