DeKALB – Residents in one of DeKalb’s largest rental buildings are without hot water Monday, according to a news release from the city. City officials as of about 11:30 a.m. estimated hot water would be restored by the end of the business day Monday to The Terraces of DeKalb, 1100 W. Lincoln Highway, formerly Lincoln Tower. “Landlords are required by City code to provide residents with hot water,” City officials wrote in a news release.

SYCAMORE – A Somonauk 19-year-old was sentenced this week to 25 years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping in connection to the repeated sexual assault of a minor, court records show. Franklin E. Tooley was enrolled at Somonauk High School when he was arrested March 24, 2023. He initially was detained without release at the River Valley Juvenile Justice Center in Joliet, records show. Tooley pleaded guilty on April 7 to one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony.

SYCAMORE – Jonathan D. Hurst has asked a DeKalb County judge to reconsider the two life sentences she handed him last month for the violent murders of Sycamore elderly mother and son Patricia Wilson and Robert Wilson, court records show. Hurst’s defense lawyer, Chip Criswell of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, filed a motion April 3 asking Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick to reconsider Hurst’s consecutive life prison sentences.
Nehring Electrical Works building damaged by fire in downtown DeKalb

DeKALB – Machinery inside an industrial building in downtown DeKalb caught fire Tuesday night, and the cause remains under investigation, authorities said Wednesday. Crews from the DeKalb Fire Department responded at about 8:33 p.m. Tuesday to Nehring Electrical Works, 813 E. Locust St., DeKalb, for reports of smoke in the building, according to a news release from the fire department. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming through an overhead door of the single-story building.

SYCAMORE – A half hour before jury selection was to begin Monday for a DeKalb bank robbery trial, the man accused asked a judge to postpone, arguing prosecutors didn’t give him enough time to review evidence. Lead prosecutor Daniel Regna said in response that Matthew L. Martin, 44, of Chicago was “gaming the system.” Regna told Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery he and fellow assistant state’s attorney Brooks Locke were prepared for trial to begin.

SYCAMORE – Jury selection for the trial of a Chicago man charged with robbing a DeKalb bank in July 2024 is set to start Monday, after the man accused rejected two plea offers from prosecutors this week. Matthew L. Martin, 44, of Chicago, plans to represent himself when jury selection begins Monday morning. He spent Wednesday through Friday in court presided over by Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery as final preparations were made for trial.

DeKALB – Newcomer Bradley Hoey has been elected to the DeKalb City Clerk’s Office by a wide vote margin, unofficial write-in results released Thursday show. Hoey collected 1,302 votes, a significant lead over challengers Lynn Fazekas with 283 votes and Steve Kapitan with 225 votes. Fazekas and Kapitan previously served as clerks. Results were published by DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Tasha Sims Thursday morning.

SYCAMORE – A Chicago man charged with robbing a DeKalb bank in July 2024 declined prosecutors’ guilty plea offer Wednesday that included a 24-year prison sentence served at 50%, opting instead to move forward with an expected jury trial April 7. Matthew L. Martin, 44, of Chicago plans to represent himself. He appeared in court for what was to be the final hearing before jury selection begins Monday.
