I KNEW George Will before I got to know him. Throughout the 1970s, while a student at Hampshire College, and then in the ’80s as I became a filmmaker, I was always aware of George, someone I thought was the polar opposite of me politically, but to whom I found myself returning time and again. Gradually, I sensed that he was challenging me, forcing me to wrestle with my beliefs and arguments, and to realize — a critically important lesson — that I could respect someone who held different views.
