'Twelve Years a Slave'

My wife and I recently watched the movie “Twelve Years a Slave”. The movie is based on the 1853 autobiography “Twelve Years a Slave” by free Negro Solomon Northup. Northup was kidnapped in Washington D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery. After spending 12 years working on plantations in Louisiana, he was released after finally being able to get some help with sending a message to his friends in New York.

As a long time newspaper publisher, I have been amazed at some of the stories that come walking through the front door of the newspaper. I am going to share one of them with you regarding health care, and I think you will find it interesting. One of the stories I read was about a flight from Mwanza, Tanzania to Dar es Salaam, the largest city in country.

April is designated National Volunteer Month. This year marks the 34th celebration since it was created in 1991 to recognize the efforts of dedicated community volunteers. According to rewardvolunteers.coop, April is a month dedicated to recognizing the importance of volunteering and honoring the significant contributions volunteers make by generously donating their time and talents to worthy causes. It was founded by then President H.W. Bush when he created the Points of Light organization.

April Fool’s Day is right around the corner, and I personally do not like it. Yes, parts of it are funny, and that is the only good thing about it. Ever watch "Storage Wars" on cable television? It’s a show that features a group of buyers who attend auctions where the contents of abandoned storage lockers are sold off to the highest bidder. Many times the lockers are so full of stuff that the bidder is actually bidding blindly by not knowing what exactly is in the locker. They can see some stuff but are not allowed to enter the locker or touch anything, so they are taking a real risk with their money if they overbid the worth of the locker.

For as long as I can remember there has always been Daylight Savings Time and I do not ever recall there being any problems with it other than remembering which way to set your clock. After all, it’s pretty simple and only happens twice per year. In the spring we spring ahead an hour, so move your clock one hour ahead. Is spring here?

Is spring here? I know it’s not, but my brain says otherwise, because it sure looks and feels like it. Barring any big switch in weather patterns we will most definitely see an early ice melting date on the lakes this year. That means boats, docks and lifts will all be in the water much earlier than last year. The robins will probably be here soon, and I am quite sure the tulips are a short time away.
