The families of 130 children who attend a daycare in Springbank, just west of Calgary, are scrambling to find new places to care for their children. Rocky View Schools said it was notified on May 26 that building being used by Springbank Cottage Childcare is no longer considered structurally sound and must be permanently closed. The building has been in use since 1903 - first as a school and now as a daycare.

A new report is warning the annual levy charged to Alberta oil companies to fund the cleanup of orphaned oil and gas wells remains too low to keep up with the rate of surrendering. The report, written by former University of Calgary Public Interest Law Clinic lawyer Drew Yewchuk, says this year's levy rate combined with low rates in previous years is leading to an estimated funding shortfall of $1.2 billion.

The number of confirmed cases of measles in Alberta's south health zone has taken another big jump. The latest numbers from Alberta Health show there were 46 new cases of measles confirmed over the weekend - and 44 of them were in the south health zone. The other two cases were in northern Alberta.

As the wildfire situation across western Canada heats up again, firefighters are unlikely to get any help from Mother Nature to start the week. With daytime temperatures expected to soar to close to 30 C on Monday - about 10 C above normal for this time of year - Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning of "another day of explosive fire activity." It said more smoke being ejected across the northern Prairies will likely lead to the expansion of special air quality statements.
