    Veronica Garcia, a senior at Spokane East Valley High School, Wash., successfully defended her WIAA Class 2A state championship at 400 meters on Saturday. The transgender girl was the first trans athlete in Washington state history to win an individual state title with a wire-to-wire win last year. Her repeat win was faster but harder. Garcia won a challenge from crosstown rival Lauren Matthew of Spokane West Valley to win in 55.70 seconds.
