    Penn State wrestler Erik Gibson came out as gay somewhat quietly on Instagram earlier this year. Now he’s making a bigger splash with a Pride Month video sharing his coming-out journey. In March, Gibson had posted an Instagram message coming out publicly as a gay wrestler at Penn State. The Nittany Lions have won the last four NCAA Division I wrestling championships, and 12 of the last 14. “Stepping into the light isn’t always easy, but living my truth is worth it,” Gibson wrote at the time.

    When I was younger, people saw me as a butch lesbian. I didn’t exactly feel like a woman, but I didn’t have the words for what I was feeling either. What I did know was that I was attracted to women — and that wasn’t going to change.     When I wrote a piece for Outsports about horses and gender, I didn’t expect it to generate much reaction outside of a few queer folks who love animals as much as I do. I wrote it from the perspective of a trans man who had come out in college, with a horse by my side who offered comfort, not confusion. I wanted to explore how nonhuman animals don’t ask you to prove your gender, and how that contrasts sharply with the world of human sports.

    The WNBA’s 29th season is well underway. Never before has a season been more important to the future of the league than this one. Sure, some may argue that the first season was the most crucial. There’s always that perspective. Or perhaps a milestone season like their 25th was tops. Yet the 2025 season — the one we get to watch right now through September — is the bellwether season that will tell us more about the future of the WNBA than any other. How lucky are we to sit back and watch?
