In the last 24 hours about 88,000 lightning strikes have been detected, with around a quarter over land, MetService says. The strikes occurred while a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was covering most of the North Island, the thunderstorms starting just before midnight. MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker told 1News the thunderstorms were concentrated along a "big rain band going across the country" overnight.

Auckland Council's chief executive has written to the land owner of an abandoned golf club in the city's Gulf Harbour suburb, seven weeks after two fires largely destroyed its buildings. The Whangaparāoa Peninsula course, which hosted the New Zealand Golf Open in 2005 and 2006, was closed "with immediate effect" in July last year. The first fire occurred on May 18 and saw the club's golf shop go up in flames.

Two fires three days apart at an abandoned golf club in Auckland's Gulf Harbour were likely caused by an "incendiary" of some sort, a fire investigator says. The Whangaparāoa Peninsula course, which hosted the New Zealand Golf Open in 2005 and 2006, was closed "with immediate effect" in July last year. Firefighters from across the city were called to the first fire at the Gulf Harbour Country Club just before 3am on May 18.

Up to 160mm of rain has fallen on the West Coast in the last 12 hours, forcing some in Franz Josef to evacuate overnight as a precaution. It comes as a major weather system brings days of heavy rain and strong winds to the area. State Highway 6 is now closed between Haast and Franz Josef due to slips. West Coast Emergency Management told Stuff some residents living on the south side of the Waiho River — which has reached peak levels — evacuated as a precaution overnight.
