He claims agents handling the buyout of his cyclone-destroyed property told him his best bet would be to take the relocation offer and keep the land. "They said my rates would be minimal," Tong said. But he says they weren't. However, a spokesperson for Hastings District Council says The Property Group acted as agents for the council and was unaware of any advice given regarding ongoing rates obligations.

It’s been a tiring few weeks for Rob Tranter after he drove one of his work vans through the Meeanee road works in Napier. He says he’s been sent from pillar to post between Napier City Council, Downer and his insurance company. Dozens of cars were damaged during the road works, with drivers describing loose tar and chip seal piling onto their tyres, slowing their cars to an almost undrivable speed. Stones slowly shaking loose from other vehicles began to chip at their paintwork and windscreens.

Gardens are being dug up and buildings washed in the Wellington suburb of Newtown, after a "wet slurry" of asbestos was blown onto properties by waterblasters on a nearby roof. According to a letter sent to residents, and provided to RNZ by Wellington City Council, the contamination occurred on 9 March during pressure washing activities on the asbestos roof at 102 Daniell Street. Southerly winds blew the spray over "several" nearby properties, covering them with contaminated debris.

One of Auckland's southern suburbs, Takanini, has launched a new community patrolp branch. Driven by the Sikh community and some local volunteers, the initiative is being backed by Auckland Council and police. The grassroots effort aims to put more eyes and ears on the street as residents report growing concerns about crime. Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib hosted the launch on Monday, at which speakers described the community patrols as a turning point for a fast-growing suburb.
