AUBURN — As a critical deadline passed Wednesday, the new board of directors leading efforts to save Saint Dominic Regional High School is proposing to lease the school and move middle school students to the high school. Those plans, as well as frustrations with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, were included in a long statement shared on the board’s Facebook page Wednesday night.

LEWISTON — Residents and school department employees will now be prioritized during the School Committee public comment period at meetings. Waiving a second reading, the School Committee approved changes to the public comment policy during an April 7 meeting that limits the comment period to 30 minutes, with each person getting three minutes to speak, and allowing Lewiston residents and employees to speak first. The policy goes into effect at the next regular meeting.

BOSTON — Despite the plan to close its high school, Saint Dominic Academy argued Tuesday in its appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit that it continues to and will continue to be harmed by the state’s anti-discrimination law, which bars it from receiving state tuition funds. For several decades, Maine had a law excluding religious schools from receiving state funds for students who lived in towns where no public school options are available.

AUBURN — When the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland announced Friday it is closing Saint Dominic Academy’s high school at the end of this school year, it sent shockwaves through families of students in the private school, along with alumni. Students wore red Monday to protest the decision. People took to Facebook to share their dismay, frustration and feelings.

AUBURN — Saint Dominic Academy will close its high school, grades 9 through 12, at the end of this current school year, according to a letter Bishop James Ruggieri sent to parents. All grades will now reside at the Holy Cross campus in Lewiston. “After much prayer, consultation, and reflection, it is with a heavy heart that I share with you my decision to close the high school division of St. Dominic Academy (grades 9-12) at the conclusion of the current school year,” he wrote in the letter.
