The WCCUSD school board is expected to vote next week on whether to cut an additional $13 million from its 2025-26 and 2026-27 operating budgets by laying off employees, including 17 classroom teachers this year, and leaving positions unfilled. The equivalent of 43 positions this year and 47 positions next year will be impacted.

News Brief Thursday January 16, 2025 10:08 am Three campuses in the California State University system are trialing software that uses a form of generative artificial intelligence with the goal of boosting students’ reading comprehension. Cal State Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino are piloting the software, which includes a chatbot function that interacts with students about their reading assignments, asking questions and sharing short comments about the text.

News Brief Thursday January 16, 2025 2:10 pm The Pasadena Unified School District hopes to start welcoming students back in phases starting next week, according to a district media release. Five of the district’s campuses and three of its charter schools experienced serious damage as a result of the Eaton Fire, and more than 10,000 of the district’s 14,000 students had to evacuate. And, 1,387 employees lived within the district’s evacuation zones, including many whose homes have perished.
