CLARKSVILLE — Providence scored very early and very late, while holding Christian Academy of Knoxville (Tenn.) out of the end zone, in a season-opening 13-2 triumph Friday night at Murphy Stadium. “That’s a really good team we beat,” Pioneers head coach Daniel McDonald said. “We did a really good job up front.”Providence, which was coming off one of the best campaigns in program history in 2023, got off to a fast start.

SELLERSBURG — Silver Creek has a plethora of potent offensive weapons back as the Dragons prepare for the season. They return their quarterback (Kedon Ward), their 1-2 punch at running back (Jamari Powell and Samuel Conn) and their top receiver (Darius Gray), all seniors, from a team that went 6-4 in 2023. “I think we have the potential to be very good offensively,” said Dave Papenhaus, who is entering his sixth year as Silver Creek’s head coach. RAMSEY — Even with a new head coach, it’s the same story for Silver Creek. The Dragons won their seventh straight sectional title Monday night. The defending state champions jumped out to a three-run lead and sidelined Salem 6-2 in the Class 3A North Harrison Sectional championship game. First-year head coach Ryan Wheeler expressed gratitude to his team after the victory.

SELLERSBURG — A huge first-half surge fueled Seymour to a 57-35 win at Silver Creek in the regular-season finale for both Friday night. The Hoosier Hills Conference co-champion Owls embarked on a game-changing 21-2 run to take command. Michael Brooks netted a game-high 19 points to lead Seymour (18-4), which its sixth straight game. Nate Davidson scored 11 for the Dragons (12-9). Silver Creek led 5-4 after Kasen Daeger drained a 3-pointer with 4 minutes, 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

CHARLESTOWN — Scottsburg — a program steeped in tradition — took a big step toward its first sectional title in 12 years with a 54-41 win over the host Pirates in a Class 3A Charlestown Sectional semifinal Friday night. The Warriorettes (19-5), who haven't hoisted a sectional trophy since 2012, will face Madison (12-12) at 7 p.m. tonight in the sectional final. The Cubs advanced with a 54-32 win over Salem in Friday night's second semi.

HENRYVILLE — South Central’s first-half defense forced host Henryville into a couple of prolonged scoring droughts and led to a 62-49 win Friday night. The victory clinched at least a share of the Southern Athletic Conference title for the Rebels (11-4, 4-0). Defensively, scrappy South Central tried to clog up the middle and keep the ball out of the hands of Henryville’s 6-foot-7 center Aydan Head. For the most part the Rebels succeeded, especially in the second half.

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany Bulldogs battled from behind most of the second half, surged ahead in overtime and needed a last-second putback by senior Ben Seigel to pull out a thrilling 69-67 win over Seymour on Wednesday night. “It was a great team effort,” said first-year New Albany coach Jason Jones.

CLARKSVILLE — In what turned out to be a rather quick night, Providence capped off a perfect regular season with a 35-0 thumping of visiting North Harrison at Murphy Stadium on Friday . The game, however, had an unceremonious ending as the Cougars decided not to return to the field after halftime, as opposed to playing two quarters with a running clock. “I’ve never seen that before,” Pioneers coach Daniel McDonald said.

SELLERSBURG — For most of Friday night, the Silver Creek offense was on point. The Dragons took control early, pushed ahead by 21 points then held off a second-half rally from visiting Jeffersonville for a 42-28 win at Hunter Station Pizza Stadium. “Our offense played phenomenal,” Silver Creek coach Dave Papenhaus said. On the night, the Dragons (4-2) pounded for 333 rushing yards on 50 carries on the way to their first win over the Red Devils (0-6).
