In another love story, the hurdle facing the couple in this excellent new book might have been the language and culture barrier: he a traditional Jew from Warsaw; she a secular graphic designer from Bratislava. But, of course, the title gives it away; this was an affair conducted in the shadow of the gas chambers. And yet somehow, against all odds, Zippi Spitzer and David Wisnia did indeed fall in love and grab on to each other’s humanity in one of history’s bleakest settings.

When I took a train to Levittown, Pennsylvania in August of 2018, my plan was to interview David Wisnia, a Polish Jew who’d arrived in Ellis Island in 1949. By the time he was 15, David was an orphan, alone in the world, fleeing Nazis. By sixteen, he was a prisoner in Auschwitz, forced to carry corpses in the most notorious Nazi death camp. And suddenly at eighteen he was clad in full American uniform, an interpreter for the US army. On its own, David’s saga was incredible.

“Lovers in Auschwitz” is an incredible true story from a terrible time. The lovers of the title are Helen Zipora “Zippi” Spitzer, a young Jewish woman from Slovakia, and David Wisnia, a young Jewish man from Poland. While imprisoned at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Zippi managed to secure a position helping the commandants of the women’s camp, a role she tried to use to save other inmates; she also became romantically involved with David, a talented singer.
