When my daughter was a little girl, she loved hearing stories about my childhood. As far as she could tell, the place where I grew up was strange and exotic. A place where the muezzin’s call to prayer woke you up every morning before sunrise, only for you to turn over and keep on sleeping. A place where a 5-year-old girl would watch her 1-year-old sister overnight, knowing that if the baby woke up, all she had to do was run to the nearby shelter, the one with the TV, and alert her parents.
