More than a dozen local artists will gather at Lord’s Mercantile in Millville on Saturday, April 12, for the first “Art at the Merc” event. Works of art for sale at Art at the Merc will range from pottery to photography, according to organizer Amber Ellis, who is the events manager for Lord’s Landscaping and Lord’s Mercantile. Lord’s owner Amy Hughes said the event was the brainchild of artists Dawn Pierro and Travis Bower, a jewelry maker and woodworker, respectively.

One of the last pieces of undeveloped land in Fenwick Island has been donated to the Town and will soon become a nature preserve. The land — two lots that sit across from Fenwick Island Town Hall at Coastal Highway and Bayard Street — will be named the Faucett Okie Nature Preserve, in honor of the family that donated it to the Town.

Mary Odder spent last Thursday getting herself spruced up. She got her hair cut, got a manicure and some new clothes. The day of pampering was in preparation for the next day: On Friday, March 28, Odder turned 100 years old. On that day, Odder, of Dagsboro, sat at her dining room table as neighbors and friends gathered in her front yard, which was festooned with balloons and a large, colorful sign. She wore a sparkly tiara atop her perfectly coiffed new haircut.

The Indian River School District Board of Education voted unanimously Monday, March 31, to hold a second referendum seeking to raise property taxes to help counteract budget shortfalls for the coming year. The referendum for current expense funding will be held June 5. School board members heard concerns at Monday’s sparsely attended special meeting from several staff members and parents. The meeting was scheduled following the March 20 referendum vote to discuss the district’s next steps.

Whether you (or more importantly, your children) like your plastic Easter eggs in a “Scramble” or an “Eggstravaganza” or just a good old-fashioned “Egg Hunt,” chances are eggcellent that there will be at least one of those in your neighborhood in the next couple of weeks. Egg hunt season begins on Saturday, April 12, but if you miss those, there are still plenty of chances to hunt for candy-filled eggs. One local “hunt” with some impressive history is the Betty Madara Easter Egg Hunt.
